Can’t. Stop. Smiling.

Well.  That was fun.

Democrats humiliated Republicans across the country.

While some degradation dust still needs to settle, I felt the need to post a quick note.

Of course, anyone not living completely off-grid is aware of the big news this morning.  In January, Democrats will control both the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate.  Democrats will hold an impressive majority of House seats. Democrats will hold at least 54 Senate seats with two seats yet to be called.  It’s a true rout.

Beyond the Congressional headlines, however, …

  • After having been completely shut out of statewide races for over 30 years, Texas Democrats won not only a U.S. Senate seat, but also the offices of Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, & Railroad Commissioner. Texas Democrats are additionaly on-track to win the other 3 statewide executive offices, 4 seats on the Texas Supreme Court, and control of the Texas State House.
  • The Trump-led redistricting efforts turned out to be a disaster for the GOP, failing to meet expectations in Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Alabama, and Ohio.
  • Democrats will hold a majority of Governorships for the first time in 16 years.
  • Democrats broke GOP trifectas in Texas, Georgia, Iowa, New Hampshire, and Ohio.  Democrats claimed new trifectas in Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.  [A trifecta is where one party controls the Governors office and both state legislative chambers.]
  • Democrats won supermajorities in 5 state legislative chambers.  Republicans lost supermajorities in 10 state legislative chambers.

My faith in America seriously needed this repudiation of Trumpism and the politics of fear.  I look forward to finally having a Congress that is willing to challenge executive lunacy.  I look forward to seeing how Democrats handle their new majorities.  I also look forward to a possible rebirth of a sane Republican party that finally frees itself from the cult into which it has fallen.

There’s a lot of work to be done and I’ll have more to say after I’ve had a chance to breathe.

For now, though, I just want to enjoy the moment.
