I first posted to this rendition of my political blog seven years ago today.
I’ve been absent for a while, largely tending to wounds inflicted by the last election. Unfortunately, those wounds are still unhealed.
As I feared, this administration – aided by cowardly Congressional Republicans and disorganized Congressional Democrats – has proven to be a cruel, soulless, vacuous, authoritarian regime and a global embarrassment. I disagree not only with the vast majority of policies advanced by Trumpists but, more importantly, I am appalled by their definition of what it means to be an American.
I am also thoroughly disgusted by Trumpism’s attempted appropriation of what it means to be a Christian. While I don’t claim to be a religious scholar, I have at least read the Bible. It seems to me that many of this administration’s positions – and many of our president’s worsening personal traits – are in direct opposition to the biblical principles that I was taught as a child and that I understand as an adult. While Matthew 25:41-45 and Leviticus 19:34 immediately come to mind, I’ll also randomly reference Deuteronomy 17:16-17, Proverbs 12:22, Proverbs 16:18, Isaiah 1:17, Matthew 7:15, Mark 10:41-44, and 1 Timothy 6:10. I could go on.
In any case, I have perhaps convalesced long enough. I will celebrate this minor anniversary by endeavoring to resume posting herein. I can’t guarantee any regularity of said posts as I am still prone to throwing things and/or shouting obscenities when confronted with the news of the day. However, if I’m going to complain about the state of our country (and I really want to complain), I must at least be willing to add my small voice in reasoned opposition.
I will still be the old guy mumbling to himself at the end of the bar. I just might have my laptop open.
